I remember being on the dating scene and a common theme during our conversations was consistent. They often expressed the lack of seriousness men had about their lives. It was a huge turn off that grown men were unaware of situations where seriousness should have been applied. Joking inappropriately to avoid a real conversation or downplaying a topic because it required actual thought have driven good women back to the dating seen.

A mature man understands that life isn’t a big game of “sexual tag” and just about having a good time with friends. A serious man knows that handling life matters with careful consideration or application often times paves the way for good times. Communication problems with significant others, financial matters, and raising children are just a few scenarios that a man recognizes are serious. A sign of immaturity is the misuse of seriousness.

Have you ever seen a friendly game of basketball, spades, or any competitive event go south thru the misuse of seriousness. I’ve seen men beat up each other over an infraction done or perceived during a game. What makes it even worse is when you seen those same individuals blow off spending time with their kids or managing their funds so they can get out of their parents house, to go have a good time.

A serious man isn’t a party crasher or a stick in the mud. A serious man understands matters of importance and treats them as such. I will leave you with a passage of scripture that relates to this topic. Titus is one of God’s young disciples and Paul is mentoring him. Paul begins to instruct Titus on how he should structure his messages and lifestyle to lead God’s people.

Titus 2 (Amplified Version)

1BUT [as for] you, teach what is fitting and becoming to sound (wholesome) doctrine [the character and right living that identify true Christians].
2Urge the older men to be temperate, venerable (serious), sensible, self-controlled, and sound in the faith, in the love, and in the steadfastness and patience [of Christ].
